The Nuance-letter

$5/month

Disability Advocacy is nuanced. Let’s simplify it.

Did you know that it is legal to pay disabled people less than minimum wage? Did you know that people with disabilities are 3x more likely to be victims of violent or sexual assault? Did you know that when a disabled person resports a crime, someone is convicted only 9% of the time? Did you know that 79.9% of disabled people are unemployed? Did you know that, up until the 1970s, there were laws in some states that made it illegal for disabled people to even be seen in public?

Probably not, because we aren’t taught about disability rights or disability history in school.

When you first heard these facts I’m guessing two things happened:

  1. You thought “no way, really?!” and you were about to google them.

  2. You wanted to help in real + tangible ways.

I’ve created a system to help you learn about disability rights, equity, inclusion and how to be an ally in meaningful ways: the Nuance-letter. The Nuance-letter is a monthly resource that will be written, researched, themed, and filled with 4 strategic steps to help you be a better ally to disabled people.

What’s included each month?

TL;DR

Did you know that in 2021 CVS was suing congress to overturn parts of the ADA to increase their profits? Did you know that United Airlines was responsible for a key figure in the disability rights movement? The TL;DR portion of the nuance-letter breaks down BIG headlines that affect disabled people in bite size pieces for people who are brand new to advocacy and includes sources, articles and other creators to learn from. The entire structure of this resource will be to educate you on pressing issues facing our community, illustrate the nuance and things that you might not realize as a non disabled person that relate this issue to our everyday lives, and give you digestible and actionable information you can move on in 10 minutes or less a month that makes real change for disabled people.

Something to learn.

Our “something to learn” section would focus on a large and pressing issue that is affecting disability rights, statistics with sources about how it plays out in the disability community and the nuance that gets missed when we just share things instantaneously on social media.

Something to do.

When you hear about issues facing disabled people you likely want to do something. This section of the nuance-letter would give you actionable steps that truly make an impact. Maybe it would be signing a petition, a script you could send to your congressperson voicing your concern about conservatorship abuse, or an organization you could make a donation towards, or volunteer at.

Something to share.

Your voice matters - we’ve all seen what happens when large groups of people rally together and demand change. We’ll equip you with digital assets like images, graphics, and copy to share with your audiences that are all researched with shareable links (for when the trolls or your annoying uncle on Facebook doubts you).

Something to say.

Don’t know what to say when you hear someone make an ableist remark? We’ll give you lines you can practice. Wish you had deeper conversations with your friends about this? We’ll give you a simple and meaningful conversation starter to get your friends talking about disability rights and dismantling your implicit biases together. Want your company to prioritize disability in their DEI practices? We’ll give you resources to explain why it matters.

Your support enables us to pay our processing fees, writers, researchers and other disability advocates for their emotional and professional labor.

FAQs

Why is it only once a month?

Currently we are not profitable and I am paying all of our amazing writers, researchers, and advocates out of pocket. These nuance-letters will be well researched, strategic and concise to maximize your time and advocacy.

When does the first one get released?

June 1st, 2022.

Is this a good fit for my company?

While your employees will learn a lot about implicit bias, this is not set up to focus on workplace activism. If you want more workplace activism, check out the business edition of the nuance letter.
